My immigrant classmates
When I was 11 or 12, I discovered something magical. My immigrant classmates would translate short texts for me - simple things like what I did over the weekend -into their native languages.
I couldn’t properly learn the grammar, but I became obsessed with these texts. I’d repeat them over and over, in loop, until they stuck. Years later, I still remember parts of them (clearly knowing what I’m saying), despite never studying the grammar formally.
That’s when I realized: having a basic toolkit of sentences - phrases you know by heart - gives you the perfect foundation to build your language skills on top of.
The disappearing words trick
The problem? Learning by heart is usually boring. It’s awful, actually.
But then I discovered a game-changing technique in my beginner Dutch class.
Our teacher made us repeat a short dialogue, but with a twist: we’d say it all together several times, then she’d remove one word.
We’d repeat it again. Then she’d remove another word.
By the end, there were no words left on the board - but we’d memorized the entire dialogue anyway. Our brains had retained it through pure repetition, almost without us noticing.
My solution
